The woods.
People turn to it in times of crises, seeking the primordial peace it contains. A man struggling with divorce and the death of his dad does just that.
But the woods the man enters is far from the Pennsylvania forests where his late father taught him to hunt white-tailed deer. This woods is eight hours South, in Virginia’s Catawba Valley, home to a remote section of the Appalachian Trail.
Here lurks more than primordial peace. Here there is also primordial danger.
There are also other hikers. Some share only footsteps on the trail. Others exchange trivialities before continuing on towards Maine or Georgia. One hiker is less distant, more receptive to deeper communication. The two men become trail buddies and confidants, each as willing as a priest to hear another woodland confession.
Confusing a willing listener with a worthy confidant…his late father must have skipped that lesson during deer-tracking. The price of that decision rests in a murder hole.
